The Celebration of Holi

The Celebration of Holi

Posted 3/25/2024

I may be a smidgen late to the celebration but the holiday known as Holi was not lost on me today-- and the fact that the first Lunar Eclipse of year just feel on it!

Are you feeling the feely-feels too? TBH I have been on and off crying all dang day!

And even though I would probably have to grab my 'allergy'injection pen' due to allergies (see the pic), I would still like to participate in one of the many Hindu celebrations of Good overcoming Evil and a return to the light.

Here's some info on what Holi is about:

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a vibrant and joyous celebration deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. Here’s what you need to know about this lively holiday:

  1. Origin and Significance:Holi marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
It is celebrated on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Falgun.
The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
One of the legends associated with Holi tells the story of Prahlada, who survived a pyre while his aunt Holika was burned to death. Hence, the festival is also a celebration of this triumph.
  2. Celebrations:Families and friends come together to smear powdered colors on each other’s faces and drench one another in colored water.
People sing, dance to drum beats, and participate in private parties and public festivities.
It’s not uncommon for strangers to playfully attack each other with colored water on the streets.
On the eve of Holi, Hindus light bonfires to symbolize the burning of Holika.
  3. Global Observance:Holi is a public holiday in India and one of the country’s most celebrated Hindu festivals, alongside Diwali.
The festival is also observed in Nepal, which has a significant Hindu population.
Celebrations extend to cities around the world, including New York.

In summary, Holi is a time for joy, camaraderie, and exuberant color play, celebrating the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. 🌸🎨🌈
